Backpackers Bible

Backpackers - a tribe of intrepid travellers

Backpackers are on a journey of adventure,
of fun, of searching and seeking.
They are on a mission,
looking for new and exciting experiences,
ranging from bungee-jumping
and white water rafting to body-piercing and tatooing,
hiking and bushwalking to scuba diving and surfing.
They long to wander off the beaten track
and engage in the culture of the country they are visiting,
and they seek deep and meaningful relationships.
They want to encounter new ways of doing things,
rejecting the materialism and comfort of home for hostels
and buses, campervans, car and tents or swags,
hoping to experience life to the max.
They are members of a generation
who have the potential to be future decision-makers
and shapers in their home nations,
and they are intent on finding personal fulfilmemt,
often assessing and changing values,
life-choices, careers and priorities in the process of their journey.

Backpackers and spirituality

Backpackers are interested in and open to spiritual things.
Backpackers go places to learn new things r
ather than confirm what they already know.
They have a desire for relationship and community.
In their search for this they will visit historic churches,
Hindu temples, Buddhist monasteries and New Age communes,
looking for that all-important thing, community.
However, they are not just on a search
for a place to stay but for a place to be.
They will appreciate and engage with nature
in the scenery around them, whether that is the barren outback,
the luscious green gorges and rainforest waterfalls,
the rugged, unspoilt coast or the star-studded night sky.
